'Tāniko' street furniture

2020

Tāniko is furniture for specification in public spaces, designed for and with Tilley Group in Wellington, New Zealand.

The form of the seat is based on a sofa. It features a continuous back and armrest, solid pedestal footing and textile influenced patterning.

The perforations in the back and armrest of the seat reference the eponymous Tāniko weaving pattern Rau Kumara. This patterning, and subsequent transparency, embeds the furniture in its environment, complementing and blending with the surrounding landscaping. It also helps make the seat feel ‘of its place’.

Solid New Zealand grown Saligna slats wrap around the front of the seat to create the timber ‘cushion’ and hide its internal structure. Slat fasteners are also accessed internally, thus keeping a clean and comfortable appearance to the seat.
